Discover Sylt
Wide beaches, long walks along the mudflats, wind in your ears – Sylt is an island for dogs. As long as you know the rules. Here are the essentials in brief.
From 1 November to 14 March, dogs are allowed on almost every beach on Sylt. That makes autumn and winter the loveliest time for a holiday with your dog.
From 15 March to 31 October, dogs are only allowed on the marked dog beaches. During this period you may not cross other sections of the beach with your dog either.
In Westerland: Nordseeklinik Nord and Dikjen Deel. In Rantum: by the campsite, Henning-Rinken-Wai, Tadjem Deel, Samoa and Sansibar. In Kampen: section A at Buhne 16 in the north and section N at the Sturmhaube in the south. The other villages on the island have designated dog beaches too.
In Kampen, dogs must always be kept on a lead on the beach, and when it is busy that applies everywhere. And of course: pick up after your dog straight away.
Keitum lies on the Wadden Sea side of the island. Paths along the mudflats, over the Green Cliff and through the quiet streets with their old captains' houses are ideal for calm rounds – in the morning and evening there is hardly anyone about.
The mudflats are part of the national park, and sheep often graze in the meadows. Look out for signs about keeping dogs on a lead, especially during the breeding season in spring.
On the car train your dog simply stays in the car – the fare is per vehicle. The engine stays off during the crossing, so bring a blanket in winter and water in summer.
The island is also easy to reach by train. Dogs travel free of charge on the island buses.
